In this subject, students consolidate the basic elements covered in Ancient Egyptian 1, and are introduced to more complex grammar and syntax, as well as some of the issues involved in interpreting an ancient language. Increasingly difficult texts are read from a variety of sources. Background information on ancient Egyptian culture is woven into the subject matter throughout the semester. By the end of the subject, students should have a sufficient grasp of the language and script to read hieroglyphic texts of moderate difficulty with vocabulary assistance. Students who successfully complete this subject may progress to Ancient Egyptian 3.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Examine the elements of the grammar, syntax, vocabulary and writing system of Ancient Egyptian
- Begin reading hieroglyphic texts of moderate difficulty with vocabulary assistance
- Analyse a variety of Ancient Egyptian texts, including literary works, historical narratives, and inscriptions
- Translate Ancient Egyptian texts into modern languages, while preserving the nuances and stylistic features of the original texts.

Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Develop critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate concepts, beliefs, considering multiple perspectives, and supporting evidence
- Communicate effectively in writing and synthesis an argument in cogent form
- Evaluate the impact of social, ethical, and cultural contexts
- Acquire greater confidence in tackling unfamiliar problems
