This is an advanced language subject for Honours students in Arabic. The level of study, content, and assessment in the subject will be determined by the Coordinator after placement testing. Based on the outcome of testing, students will either be placed in an appropriate stream of advanced language study or a customised course of study will be available.
The customised course of study will focus on research skills. Students will develop these skills by engaging with Arabic sources, theoretical frameworks, and discipline-specific methods and conventions. Students will be guided in applying critical analysis techniques to Arabic-language materials, fostering a deeper understanding of linguistic and cultural nuances essential for effective research.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Use Arabic effectively for academic purposes
- Establish strong research skills necessary for thesis writing
- Interpret and analyse textual styles and discourse as related to their area of interest in Arabic Studies
- Situate the intellectual debates on key topics in Arabic language and/or culture research.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Think in critical, analytical, and theoretical terms
- Develop higher-level research skills
- Become self-aware of their intercultural context and understand the context and history of academic disciplines
- Communicate scholarly work in written and spoken mediums clearly and economically
- Enhance time management and planning skills.
