The aim of this subject is to build student knowledge of the fundamental principles of effective teaching for learning in higher education. Through seminars and discussions, participants will be introduced to theories of learning and teaching, and research-based approaches to facilitating effective learning in large and small group settings. The subject will draw upon current educational research and participant experiences to explore topics such as student engagement, assessment, inclusive teaching, evaluation of teaching and other topics relevant to the contexts in which participants teach.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of effective teaching, learning and assessment in higher education;
- Explain some of the key research relating to teaching and learning in higher education, and the central debates in this field;
- Discuss contemporary issues and challenges facing students in higher education and the implications for educators;
- Identify some of the resources available to support teaching in higher education, and explain how these can be used effectively in various learning and teaching environments;
- Demonstrate an analytical and reflective approach to teaching activities.
Generic skills
In this subject, students will develop the following set of key transferable skills:
- Critical analysis of theories and principles, and appropriate application to a range of contexts;
- Critical reflection and examination of contemporary issues in higher education;
- Peer review and self-evaluation of professional practice; and
- Effective written and oral communication for academic and professional audiences.
