This semester-long subject will explore the history, politics and socio-cultural contexts of the French-speaking Pacific with a particular focus on New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Challenges associated with sustainable development, health and globalisation will also be considered in dialogue with various political, cultural and artistic movements with the aim to develop greater insights into the complexities and diversity of this multilayered and multifaceted region of the world.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- Reflect on and describe in oral and written French diverse aspects of the history, politics, culture and society of the French Pacific region
- Compare and contrast the colonial pasts of Australia and of New Caledonia and/or French Polynesia
- Show critical thinking and analysis through required and recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by assessing the strength of an argument
- Demonstrate research skills through competent use of the library and other information sources
- Demonstrate skills in public speaking and confidence in self-expression through seminar participation and class presentations and interaction with the local population
- Show awareness of new aspects of French and Francophone culture
- Demonstrate understanding of social, ethical and cultural contexts
- Demonstrate international awareness and openness to the world.
