Students will be required to write a thesis of 15,000 words on a topic approved by the supervisor.

 

Intended learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this subject should:

  • Have an ability to evaluate research and professional literature concerning Islam and Muslim affairs
  • Have a capacity to articulate their findings and views in oral and written presentations
  • Have an advanced understanding of major issues and sensitivities regarding Islam and Muslim affairs
  • Have a capacity to engage where appropriate with issues to do with Islam and Muslim affairs
  • Have an appreciation of the design, conduct and reporting of research.

Prerequisites

This subject is only available to students enrolled in a BH-Arts, Bachelor of Arts (Degree with Honours) or a GD-Arts, Graduate Diploma (Advanced).

Hurdle requirement: 1. Attendance hurdle requirement: Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of supervision meetings in order to qualify to have their written work assessed. Throughout the teaching periodN/A
Hurdle requirement: 2. Late Penalty and Assessment hurdle requirement: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at five per cent (5%) of the possible marks available for the assessment task per day or part thereof. All pieces of assessment must be submitted to pass the subject. Each submitted assessment must be complete, constitute a genuine attempt to address the requirements of the task and will not be accepted after 20 University business days from the original assessment due date without written approval. Time commitment details

This subject is taught over two consecutive semesters. Total time commitment for the subject is approximately 680 hours, inclusive of two semesters (thesis Part 1 and Part 2).

Additional delivery details

This is part of a 50 point thesis subject, continuing over two consecutive study periods.

Students are required to enrol in:

  • ISLM40011 Islamic Studies Thesis Part 1 (25 points) and
  • ISLM40012 Islamic Studies Thesis Part 2 (25 points), consecutively.

Students will receive a ‘CNT’ grade in the part 1 and results will be entered if and when both part 1 and 2 are completed.
