This subject guides students in further developing practices of musical composition, including ensemble writing and working with electronic media. Students explore compositional philosophy and technique through directed listening and score reading, and through creating a folio of original music (scores and recordings).
Composition Major Progression Note:
To progress from Composition 4 into further Composition subjects:
- A subject result of 65% or greater in Composition 4 is a prerequisite for MUSI30213 Composition 5
- A subject result of 64% or lower: Students may complete the degree in the Music Studies major.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- employ compositional methods and working habits to achieve compositional goals;
- communicate with performers through thoughtfully presented music notation;
- work fluently with the basic materials of musical composition—pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre and form;
- apply an expanded range of instrumental possibilities to composing for small ensembles;
- use electronic music hardware and software confidently;
- critique recent developments in musical composition, both aesthetic and technical;
- reflect on their own compositional practice and aspirations.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should have developed:
- the ability to think laterally in relation to concepts and problem-solving;
- the ability to communicate in an abstract medium;
- the ability to take initial creative ideas through to completion, including publication, public presentation and promotion.
