This subject introduces students to traditional Chinese instrumental music. Through weekly lessons culminating in an end of teaching-period performance, students learn to play a Chinese instrument, read traditional notation, and perform in a large silk-and-bamboo ensemble.
Through attendance at two concerts, students will learn to evaluate Chinese traditional music in contemporary performance contexts. Dizi, sheng, yangqin, erhu, zhonghu, zhongruan, daruan, and traditional percussion instruments are available for instruction.
Delivery
Rehearsals in this breadth subject are co-taught with MUSI20108 MCM Chinese Music Ensemble and MUSI20209 Chinese Music Ensemble 2. Students cannot simultaneously enrol in co-taught subjects in the same study period.
