This subject introduces Jazz & Improvisation students to advanced harmonic concepts and techniques.
Through practical performance activities, deep listening exercises and transcription, students acquire tools to creatively navigate highly chromatic and atonal environments as players and listeners.
This subject is only available to students enrolled in the Jazz and Improvisation major of the B-MUS Bachelor of Music.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- perform highly chromatic and atonal melodies, and harmonic structures;
- transcribe highly chromatic and atonal melodies, and harmonic structures;
- aurally distinguish intervals in highly chromatic and atonal performance contexts.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- apply critical and creative thinking, with an aptitude for continued self-directed learning;
- be adept at learning in a range of ways, including through information and communication technologies;
- expand their analytical and cognitive skills through learning experiences in diverse subjects;
- sustain the capacity to participate fully in collaborative learning and to confront unfamiliar problems.
