Students receive intensive training in orchestral and solo repertoire under the guidance of specialist staff, including conductors and orchestral instrumentalists.
Activities include weekly individual lessons; rehearsals and performances with the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; and preparation and performance of a concerto (most commonly with piano accompaniment).
Delivery
Ensemble rehearsals are co-delivered with Symphonic Ensembles and Orchestral Instrument Performance subjects.

Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of their role as a symphony orchestra member;
- collaborate and communicate with conductors and orchestral instrumentalists;
- apply different performance styles required of diverse repertoire;
- demonstrate adaptability and responsiveness appropriate to ensemble contexts;
- demonstrate a growing potential to perform solo parts with musical fluency and informed artistic individuality.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- communicate effectively in oral and written language, and in musical performance;
- demonstrate appropriate leadership in group settings;
- promote and maintain the wellbeing of self and others;
