This subject provides students with a continuation in training in research methods to deepen their understanding of evidence-based clinical practice and critical review of the scientific literature. The scholarly literacy of students is enhanced through research, analysis and reference management skills. Scientific oral and written communication skills are honed through the production of a scientific literature review and an oral presentation to student peers.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Critically analyse and interpret scientific literature and evidence, including study design and basic biostatistical approaches, relevant to a research question in veterinary medicine
- Effectively communicate research findings to a peer and expert audience in appropriate formats for both oral and written presentation
- Provide professional feedback to peers on an item of scientific scholarship
Generic skills
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Research and critically evaluate the scientific literature
- Interpret and integrate knowledge published in scientific reports
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing the results of research
- Understand and avoid plagiarism by accurately acknowledging sources used
- Comply with legal and ethical requirements related to accessing, using and storing text, data, images and sound.
