Teacher Candidates will gain an understanding of the many facets of sustainability, including environmental and social sustainability. They will examine Education for Sustainability and its similarities and differences to environmental education and develop an understanding of sustainability and its position in the national curriculum. During classes Teacher Candidates will work with colleagues to develop a unit of work that integrates sustainability across a range of learning areas in ways that meet required curriculum outcomes.
Teacher Candidates will examine a range of issues pertaining to sustainability and Education for Sustainability relevant to Australian schools, so that they are equipped to teach about sustainability and to help shape a school’s culture and to offer leadership in the area of sustainability.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, Teacher Candidates should be able to:
- Discuss aspects of sustainability, including its environmental, economic and social dimensions.
- Be capable of contributing to developing a rich unit of work that integrates education for sustainability across a range of learning areas, including assessing learning.
- Demonstrate strong subject and pedagogical content knowledge.
- Utilise digital technologies to expand learning opportunities for students.
- Develop in students the practices and attitudes required for critical thinking and the ability to work both independently and co-operatively.
- Understand the complexities of, and be able to contribute to, a school’s journey toward sustainability,
- Demonstrate a capacity for leadership and advocacy in education.

- Audit of sustainability practices in a school (750 words) due early in semester(15%)
- Briefing notes on an aspect of sustainability (2000 words) due mid semester (40%)
- Team report integrating sustainability into a unit of work (2000 words) due late in semester (40%)
- Learning reflection (250 words) due end of semester (5%)
Hurdle requirement: Minimum of 80% attendance at all scheduled lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops.
