This subject entails an original supervised research project on a topic approved by the Honours coordinator.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students should:



  • have completed supervised research on an advanced topic in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics;
  • have prepared a poster of the results of their research;
  • have completed a thesis of 15,000 words on their research;
  • be able to write a sustained piece of original argumentation; and
  • be able to survey an area of knowledge, taking into account all relevant literature on the topic.

Generic skills

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to plan, carry through and write up an original piece of research;
  • be able to understand the way in which broader issues translate into particular testable questions; and
  • be able to write clearly and incisively about complex technical issues in the field.

Eligibility and requirements

Prerequisites

This subject is only available to students enrolled in a BH-Arts, Bachelor of Arts (Degree with Honours) or a GD-Arts, Graduate Diploma (Advanced).

Additional details

This assessment statement applies to the entire enrolment across Parts 1 and 2 of the subject (i.e. LING40015 and LING40016 together):

  • A thesis of 15,000 words due at the end of the second semester (100%)

Students are also required to prepare and present a poster of their research at a poster session held at the end of the 6th week of the second semester of enrolment.

Time commitment details

This subject is taught over two consecutive semesters. Total time commitment for the subject is approximately 680 hours, inclusive of two semesters (thesis Part 1 and Part 2).

Additional delivery details

This is part of a 50 point thesis subject, continuing over two consecutive study periods.

Students are required to enrol in:

  • LING40015 LAL Thesis Part 1 (25 points) and
  • LING40016 LAL Thesis Part 2 (25 points), consecutively.

Students will receive a ‘CNT’ grade in the part 1 and results will be entered if and when both part 1 and 2 are completed.
