Students enrolled in this subject will be required to produce an original piece of work of approximately 12,000 words length on a topic in professional ethics. Topics may include conceptual investigations into the foundations of professional ethics, as well as discussions of particular ethically problematic issues. Individual thesis topics will be the result of negotiation between students and teaching staff. Students will be required to demonstrate the capacity to identify and critically engage with the relevant literature and to produce a coherent and well-argued piece reflecting this engagement.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who sucessfully complete this subject should have:
- an in-depth knowledge of the academic literature relating to the subject of their thesis;
- developed familiarity with and competence in theoretical philosophical ethics; and
- displayed the ability to understand and integrate relevant empirical research.
Generic skills
Students who successfully complete this subject should have:
- displayed the ability to engage critically with academic theorising;
- developed skills in research and analysis that will enable them to undertake further independent research work of greater length and originality;
- displayed the capacity for self-directed study; and
- displayed the ability to complete a coherent, informed and critically aware piece of work of thesis length.

This subject continues over two consecutive study periods, with students first enrolling in PHIL90036 Professional Ethics Thesis Part 1 and then subsequently enrolling in PHIL90037 Professional Ethics Thesis Part 2, for a total enrolment of 37.5 credit points. Students will receive an overall result for the subject following completion of the two-subject sequence.
