This subject builds on the knowledge and skills learnt in Paediatric Orthopaedic Physiotherapy 1. It provides the opportunity for students to acquire specialised knowledge and skills by further developing their level of clinical reasoning and clinical competency in the management of orthopaedic conditions. The subject focuses on providing students with ‘hands on’ clinical experience in an orthopaedic outpatient department under supervision. Placements include The Royal Children's Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, Sunshine Hospital and Geelong Hospital. Students will also further their knowledge in the management of fractures, spinal conditions and pharmacology.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- Obtain an appropriate history in relation to the presenting problem;
- Conduct an appropriate and comprehensive physical examination in relation to the presenting problem
- Formulate and implement appropriate management plans including investigations and referrals;
- Demonstrate evidence based clinical reasoning to formulate a differential diagnosis;
- Recognise, provide initial management and refer appropriately for conditions that require an orthopaedic consultant referral;
- Triage appropriately conditions referred to the orthopaedic outpatient clinic.
- Safely and effectively apply a correct cast or splint that correlates to the injury or deformity;
- Identify and correct/modify any problems associated with the cast or splint

On completion of the subject, students will be expected to be able to demonstrate the following generic skills:
- Critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills
- Good written and verbal communication
- Appreciation of the importance of the team approach to problem management
- An advanced understanding of professional responsibility and ethical principles in relation to individuals and community

Assessment
Additional details
- 30 minute practical exam, conducted during a clinical session at the end of the teaching period of the subject, (10%)
- 1 hour clinical examinatio, due at the end of the teaching period, (30%)
- Continuous supervisor clinical assessment, due upon completion of the subject, (60%) - Clinical supervisors will provide ongoing feedback to students during and after clinical sessions, including a more detailed conversation on the student’s progress at the end of the first week of the clinical placement. This will take into account demonstrated clinical skills and problem solving in the clinical setting, the quality of written and verbal communication with other health professionals, the quality of medical records, teamwork skills, communication with patients and families, clinical decision making and demonstrated technical ability for skills taught during the course.
