In this subject, students gain experience in designing a substantial educational research investigation that could be subsequently used to inform the development of a PhD proposal. Students negotiate to undertake the completion of a theoretically and methodologically defensible research proposal, in an area of interest, with assistance from an academic supervisor.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to
- Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in an area of contemporary research in education
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the purpose of research methodology
- Understand the theoretical context of an issue of concern in education)
- Critically assess the purpose of selected research methodologies
- Identify ethical challenges in the education research process
- Design a significant research project in education
- Communicate the plan for research
- Demonstrate a capacity to engage in reflective, critical discussion of the area of particular interest
Generic skills
This subject will develop the following set of generic skills:
1. Critical reasoning and thinking in educational research
2. Appraisal of education research debates and practices
3. Evaluation and communication of education research and practice
