AIMS
This subject asks the question ‘what makes a successful entrepreneur?’ It’s a complex topic and the subject of heated debate in the business, education and the economics communities, and also in discussions of international development, sustainability and social philanthropy. The way we will approach this subject is by looking at the behaviours, attitudes, values and skills that entrepreneurs need to create the climate for successful innovation - whether they are entrepreneurs starting new ventures or ‘Entrepreneurs’ in large organisations. What you will discover in this subject is that innovation isn’t just about having great ideas, and that entrepreneurs aren’t who you think they are. The subject will do this by looking at topics such as how innovation works and how it can be managed, different modes of entrepreneurialism, how entrepreneurs think and how to create, build and sustain an entrepreneurial business.
Students who have a weighted average mark of at least 75% in the Master of Information Systems have the option to complete the on-line Advanced Elective ISYS90093 Technopreneurship and Innovation instead of ISYS90039 Innovation & Entrepreneurship in IT.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The subject comprises 5 themes:
- 'Making New Things', a survey of current thinking about innovation and entrepreneurship
- 'The Customers' Point of View’, looking at techniques for understanding customers and consumer-led innovation
- 'Everything is Negotiable', including work done at the Harvard negotiation project on win/win negotiation and emotional negotiation
- 'Everyone Needs Help', exploring the ways entrepreneurs create support networks to help them be successful innovation and mentoring
- 'Inspire People' - an examination of the importance of vision and commitment in innovation and entrepreneurship
The subject involves advanced learning activities including case-based, experiential, and team-based approaches.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, the student is expected to:
- Have developed a sound knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation in the context of Information Systems
- Have developed and applied skills in critical thinking and systems analysis to identify, evaluate and/or communicate issues suited to the application of entrepreneurship and innovation concepts and theories to real-world practice
- Have developed and applied skills related to business communication, interpersonal, and team skills suited to the application of entrepreneurship and innovation concepts and theories to real-world practice
- Can demonstrate an understanding of professional codes of conduct and ethical standards as they apply to entrepreneurship and innovation in business practice
- Independently research and argue disparate beliefs/theories of entrepreneurship and innovation

On completion of this subject, students should have developed the following generic skills:

Completion of a minimum of 50 credit points of study

Admission into one of the following: 100pt Program course entry point in the MC-IT Master of Information Technology, 150pt Program course entry point in the MC-IT Master of Information Technology

Assessment

An individual essay (1500 words requiring 30-39 hours work) due at the end of the 1st half of semester. A choice of topics for the essay will be provided, with the overall goal being for the student to demonstrate an in depth understanding of their selected theme. The essay addresses Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO's) 1 to 5.

A group essay (Groups of 5, 3000 words requiring 20-26 hours work per student). Groups will propose an innovation, describe its nature (product, process, or business model) and propose a start-up to develop the innovation. The group will outline the roles of each member in the start-up, how they intend to fund it in the initial stages and how they will market test their innovation. The essay addresses ILO's 1 to 5. The essay is worth 20% of the overall assessment. Groups will be asked to deliver a 10-minute presentation of their work to their colleagues (5%), with each group member required to present.

Learning and Teaching Methods
The subject is delivered in twelve, 3 hour long classes, with each class containing: a lecture on theoretical concepts; project work activity; an interactive debrief on the outcomes of the group activity. Outside class students will study theory and cases through reading and continuing their group activities.
