The Master of International Education (International Baccalaureate) is a fully online program. It offers a specialist degree for teachers and administrators working at all levels of education. It is designed for those wanting to broaden their understanding and skills in relation to the philosophy and concepts underlying the International Baccalaureate (IB) and to assist those wanting to work internationally. The course investigates the IB from a range of theoretical perspectives with focused inquiry into policy and practice.
Please note that this program will not provide graduates with initial teacher education qualifications to teach in Australia.
Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
• a four-year education degree, or equivalent; or
• an undergraduate degree in any discipline and at least 50 credit points, or equivalent, of graduate study in education.
Meeting these entry requirements does not guarantee selection.
2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
• prior academic performance.
3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 7 is required.

Assessment may include the outcomes of tasks completed in collaboration with other students.

Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a superior knowledge and understanding of educational theory in the field of international education;
2. Have an understanding of the theory and practice of educational research needed to evaluate research literature and carry out appropriate inquiry/research activity;
3. Make effective use of the findings of educational writings and research in formulating solutions to issues or challenges in the area of international education;
4. Demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding that will enable them to be a resource for colleagues regarding issues in international education in particular professional situations; and
5. Demonstrate an appreciation of professional responsibilities and ethical principles in relation to the promotion of learning and teaching which should characterise leaders in the education profession.
Generic skills
On completion of this course students should be able to:
• Demonstrate essential knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of IB Education programmes
• Understand the key concepts of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy that underpin the IB
• Comprehend the intellectual, social and psychological aspects of their work with learners and synthesise theory and practice;
• Evaluate and reflect upon their teaching and on the work of the institutions/ communities in which they teach;
• Demonstrate essential knowledge and skills in relation to effective curriculum, assessment and reporting and pedagogical design;
• Comprehend the intellectual, social and psychological aspects of their work with learners and synthesise theory and practice;
• Evaluate and use constructive criticism of their own work and of the institutions/ communities in which they teach;
• Effectively use ICT to participate in learning communities as a source of professional learning;
• Understand the significance of developing their practice on the basis of research evidence;
• Conduct education research in an ethical manner;
• Undertake data management, analysis and report writing using pre-existing small-scale qualitative and quantitative data sets;
• Apply research findings with creativity and initiative to professional practice;
• Evaluate and use critical reflection of educational writing and research; and

Graduate attributes
Graduates of the Master of International Education (International Baccalaureate) engage with national and global issues and are attuned to internationalism and cultural diversity. They can apply knowledge, information and their own research in classrooms in a range of contexts and are effective oral and written communicators. Graduates have engaged with contemporary local, national and global issues and developed an understanding of the IB’s mission, purpose and philosophy. They have a high regard for human rights, social inclusion, ethics and the environment. Graduates are also aware of the social and cultural diversity in communities and can work collaboratively with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Course structure
The Master of International Education (International Baccalaureate) is a 100 credit point degree.
The degree requires completion of:
- 25 points of compulsory subjects
- at least one specialisation, each consisting of 25 points of study
- electives totalling 25 points
- capstone subjects totalling 25 points
The capstone subjects are taken at the end of the degree.

Further study
Graduates from this program are eligible to apply for entry to a Doctor of Education program provided they meet other entry requirements and subject to achievement of an H2A grade average.
To be eligible to apply for a PhD following achievement of an H2A grade average, a further 50-point Graduate Certificate in Educational Research or equivalent will be necessary.
