After completion of this subject, students will have comprehensive knowledge of the sono-anatomy and the skill in when and how to safely perform ultrasound-guided percutaneous procedures commonly performed in critical care including central and peripheral vascular access, drainage of effusions from the lung, heart and peritoneal cavities, and ultrasound-guided surgical airway procedures. Students will perform, interpret, write a report and submit a log-book of at least 15 ultrasound-guided studies and interpret and report on an additional 10 online studies.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Be familiar with the anatomy relevant to ultrasound-guided drainage of effusions from the pericardial, pleural, and abdominal cavities and cannulation of vessels and the trachea
- Be familiar with how to minimise infectious and mechanical complications from ultrasound-guided percutaneous procedures
- Display competence in ultrasound-guided procedures on simulators and/or humans including central and peripheral vascular access, drainage of effusions from the lung, heart and peritoneal cavities, and ultrasound-guided surgical airway procedures and write a structured ultrasound report
- Evaluate the requirements for training, competence, and certification in ultrasound-guided procedures
Generic skills
- Improved analytical and interpretive skills
