This subject allows graduate researchers to undertake a 3 to 6-month (full-time equivalent) research and development (R&D) internship with a host organisation (industry partner) in an area broadly related to their area of research. An internship is related to their area of research if it makes use of or contributes to their research skills or their discipline knowledge. Graduate researchers will undertake a defined research project within the host organisation and/ or participate in team-based R&D, while also being exposed to the broader operational contexts of the organisation or industry.
The internship will provide graduate researchers with the opportunity to apply their research skills and capacity in an organisational context, to gain practical experience and increase their discipline knowledge, and build professional networks to enhance their career options. Graduate researchers will have the opportunity to further develop their employability skills including communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, organisational, project-management and time-management skills, and to contextualise their research area within industry concerns and needs.
Enrolment in this subject requires approval to participate in the internship program, including approval by the Graduate Research Internships team and the graduate researcher's principal supervisor. Graduate researchers will be required to sign a student deed, which may include a confidentiality agreement and/or assign ownership of intellectual property generated during the internship to the host organisation.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, graduate researchers should be able to:
- Develop skills in conducting effective and timely research, analysis and reporting in an organisational context;
- Gain significant insight into the complexities of professional decision making and management;
- Gain practical vocational experience in an industry setting;
- Understand the value of industry and professional networks and their importance to self-reliance, lifelong learning and career progression;
- Demonstrate and critically reflect upon key professional attributes sought by employers (such as communication and interpersonal skills, project management skills, team work and initiative).

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
The student must be admitted to a graduate research course and be actively enrolled in their thesis subject, or under examination.
Completion of Research Integrity online training (RIOT)
Approval to participate in the internship program from the Graduate Research Internships team and the Principal Supervisor
Completion of a student deed, as part of an Intern Agreement signed by the University and the host organisation

Inherent requirements (core participation requirements)
Participation in a graduate research internship of at least 60 full-time equivalent (FTE) days over no less than 3 months. An FTE day is 7.6 hours, or the number of hours typical for a full‐time day in the host organisation.
The internship must consist of research and development activity that is broadly related to the candidate’s area of research. To be related to the candidate’s area of research the internship must make use of or contribute to their research skills or their discipline knowledge.
