Dancing the Dance 2 provides students who have been introduced to dance fundamentals in Dancing the Dance 1, or have prior demonstrated dance experience to intermediate level, further insight into the processes and practicalities of professional dance production.
The subject will advance the study of Dancing the Dance 1 in areas such as dance techniques, movement design, choreography, rehearsal and presentation techniques, including the realisation of a dance performance ideas with lighting and sound design.
Students will participate in a weekly dance workshop which will include a dance class in a style such as Contemporary Dance, Jazz, or another technique and a creative development session or rehearsal. The subject will conclude with a performance presentation of the work developed throughout the semester.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- apply the physical language of a range of dance techniques and the principles of choreography;
- apply dance methods for the expression of movement-based ideas;
- apply a broad understanding of lighting and sound design in the realisation of dance performance;
- document and critically reflect on the application of dance making and presentation techniques for the expression of ideas;
- enhance their capacity to work cooperatively and collaboratively in creating tasking within groups.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- prepare choreographic studies based on dance techniques and compositional strategies;
- critically analyse the use of dance-making processes in class studies;
- apply knowledge of basic dance techniques and styles fundamentals;
- develop conceptual frameworks to achieve a practical outcome;
- understand the use of lighting and sound design to enhance dance performance presentations;
- communicate in both written and visual forms;
- work collaboratively with others.
