This subject develops specialised skills and craft of imagery used in Graphic Design for professional practice.
Students will learn to compose imagery for a wide range of visual applications from art direction, animation, hand drawing, illustration, computer generation, photography and still images.
Students will expand their knowledge of how to work with imagery in graphic design from investigations of diverse cultural perspectives. The subject will introduce students to composition and visualisation techniques for real-world applications.
Students will study communication of graphic design imagery through a series of readings, talks, workshops, and studio-based projects, progressively crafting an industry-ready folio of graphic designs.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- research and analyse innovative cross-cultural approaches to working with imagery in graphic design;
- prepare a strategic design response to a brief informed by historical and cultural research;
- develop, refine and reflect on craft in graphic design imagery;
- apply analogue and digital skills with composition and visualisation techniques;
- create a cohesive folio of graphic design imagery to a professional studio standard.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- apply problem-solving and analytical thinking skills to undertake critical analysis;
- articulate and present ideas from a range of design precedents;
- develop and communicate concepts by working with different design methodologies;
- demonstrate an understanding of challenges for the professional visual artist in the 21st century;
- sustain an understanding of their relationship with and responsibility to the cultural environment and society.

Hurdle requirement: Submission of industry-ready folio complete with designs completed in Project 1, Project 2, and the Research Journal. For the purposes of meeting this hurdle requirement, each submitted assessment must be complete and constitute a genuine attempt to address the requirements of the task. Submitting only part of an assessment (e.g. only the title page) or an assessment on an irrelevant topic will not meet this hurdle requirement. | Throughout the teaching period | N/A |
