After completion of this subject, students will have the knowledge to perform and interpret clinical ultrasound of commonly encountered pulmonary pathology, grade the degree of sternal mobility after open cardiac surgery, diagnose deep venous thrombosis of the lower limb and will be able to write a focused ultrasound report. Students will have interpreted and written a report on 10 online focused ultrasound studies.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Identify the key steps required to acquire the standard lung, sternum, and lower limb deep venous thrombosis (DVT) clinical ultrasound views.
  • Interpret and write a structured interpretive report of focused ultrasound of the lung, sternal mobility after sternotomy and deep venous thrombosis of the lower limb.
  • Identify the key steps required to perform ultrasound-guided procedures on the lung.
  • Evaluate the requirements for training, competence, and certification in focused ultrasound of the lungs, sternum and DVT.

Vision

Adequate visual acuity is required to interpret clinical ultrasound. A student is expected to demonstrate sufficient visual acuity to perform the required range of skills, including reading ultrasound images from a computer monitor.
