The Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies is a one year full-time (or part-time equivalent) course designed for individuals without an educational qualification wanting to develop specialised knowledge and skills in educational theories, policies and approaches at the graduate level. Successful completion of this qualification provides guaranteed entry into several University of Melbourne 100 credit point Masters degrees in education*.
The course has been designed to meet the needs of those who are interested or involved in education policy, youth work, health education, educational administration, educational coaching and training, research and/or practice within the wider educational community, including government and non-government organisations (NGOs), as well as private organisations.
The course comprises 50 points of core subjects and 50 points of electives. Informed by evidence based research, the core subjects have been designed to introduce students to a range of national and international contemporary debates and approaches in education. These include the way in which culture and traditions influence approaches to education provision in schools, and how education can promote literacies, wellbeing, social justice and expertise. The suite of electives allows students to pursue their particular interests and include policy development, arts, sciences, psychology, sociology, sport and physical education, disabilities, youth and popular culture, early childhood development, citizenship and transitions to work.
Note that this is not an initial teacher education qualification, and does not lead to registration to teach in Australian schools.
