The Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies is a one year full-time (or part-time equivalent) course designed for individuals without an educational qualification wanting to develop specialised knowledge and skills in educational theories, policies and approaches at the graduate level. Successful completion of this qualification provides guaranteed entry into several University of Melbourne 100 credit point Masters degrees in education*.
The course has been designed to meet the needs of those who are interested or involved in education policy, youth work, health education, educational administration, educational coaching and training, research and/or practice within the wider educational community, including government and non-government organisations (NGOs), as well as private organisations.
The course comprises 50 points of core subjects and 50 points of electives. Informed by evidence based research, the core subjects have been designed to introduce students to a range of national and international contemporary debates and approaches in education. These include the way in which culture and traditions influence approaches to education provision in schools, and how education can promote literacies, wellbeing, social justice and expertise. The suite of electives allows students to pursue their particular interests and include policy development, arts, sciences, psychology, sociology, sport and physical education, disabilities, youth and popular culture, early childhood development, citizenship and transitions to work.
Note that this is not an initial teacher education qualification, and does not lead to registration to teach in Australian schools.

- In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
- an undergraduate degree in any discipline area, or equivalent.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
- In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- prior academic performance.
- The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
- Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for postgraduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 7 is required

The Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies provides guaranteed entry to the following University of Melbourne 100 point coursework Masters degrees: Master of Education, Master of Education (Educational Management), Master of Education (Student Wellbeing), Master of Education Policy (International), Master of Modern Languages (Stream B)*, Master of TESOL (Stream B)**, and Master of Literacy Education.
Also note that these degrees are not initial teacher education qualifications, and do not lead to registration to teach in Australian schools.
*NB: The guaranteed entry into the Master of Modern Languages (stream B) will only be offered to successful graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies who also have an undergraduate degree (any discipline) with a major in a language other than English or an assessed Statement of Equivalence.
**NB. The guaranteed entry into the Master of TESOL (stream B) will only be offered to successful graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies who also have an undergraduate degree (any discipline) with a significant component of English Language Studies.

The core participation requirements for study in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education are:
In all courses
1. The ability to comprehend complex information related to education and the disciplines in which the student is teaching.
2. The ability to communicate clearly and independently in assessment tasks a knowledge of the content, principles and practices relating to education and other relevant disciplines.
3. Behavioural and social attributes that enable a student to participate in a complex learning environment. Students are required to take responsibility for their own participation and learning. They also contribute to the learning of other students in collaborative learning environments, demonstrating interpersonal skills and an understanding of the needs of other students. Assessment may include the outcomes of tasks completed in collaboration with other students.

Knowledge
Graduates of this course will have advanced theoretical understanding and knowledge of current research, debates, policies and practices in education from a multidisciplinary and global perspective.
Skills
Graduates of this course will be able to:

- Evaluate the social, cultural, political and historical contexts informing education policies and practices

Graduates of this course will be able to:
- Critique and apply multidisciplinary educational theories and evidence based research to identify ways to:

Course structure
Students complete 100 credit points of study over one year full time (or part time equivalent) to complete the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies.
Students complete the four compulsory subjects (which total 50 points) and choose 50 points of subjects from the electives list (this may include up to 25 points of Breadth electives).
