Overview

The Honours program in Human Nutrition is a one-year program that comprises advanced coursework and an individual supervised research project designed to extend students’ knowledge and skills in the area of food and nutrient intake and the subsequent impact on health and chronic diseases.  Students will be involved in the experimental design of a research project and will be involved in field or laboratory experiments including the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of research results. Students are expected to critically evaluate new knowledge and effectively communicate through written reports and oral presentations their findings.

After successfully completing the program, students will be prepared to either enter the workforce pursuing a career with food companies, government regulatory bodies or health and diet related industries. Or enrol for further research study through applying for a Masters or Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this Honours program, students should be able to:

  • Conduct research in a human nutrition discipline
  • Apply scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills to enable data collection, investigation and application of the key scientific processes and technologies related to nutritional science
  • Exhibit an advanced understanding of the need for multidisciplinary and a systems-based approach to problem solving
  • Communicate effectively both in oral and written forms scientific information to diverse audiences
  • Analyse and critically evaluate peer reviewed scientific literature and design basic relevant research studies in the field of human nutrition
  • Interpret experimental results and draw accurate and relevant conclusions, based on the objectives set.

Students enrol in a total of 75 points of research project across the duration of the Honours program. This is achieved by enrolling in a combination of the following subjects in appropriate semesters to achieve a total 75 credit points:
