This elective subject builds on Orchestral Performance Practicum 2 by providing students a performance-focused, work-integrated learning experience with a professional orchestra.
By attending and playing in rehearsals and performances and through professional mentoring on orchestral techniques and excerpts, students gain practical rehearsal experience with, and further develop and refine communication skills required by, a professional orchestra. The experience culminates in a casual audition with the partner organisation.
This subject is only available to Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) students.
Placement
This subject provides students with a placement opportunity for participation with a partnered professional orchestra. Students are required to complete 22-hours of placement. Students are responsible for identifying a suitable placement with support from the subject coordinator. All placements must be approved by the subject coordinator, typically through an audition.
Travel
This subject has a placement component that may require travel within Greater Melbourne, Victoria, or interstate.
Additional Costs
This subject may incur costs in addition to tuition fees. These costs include accommodation, food, and transport, to undertake chosen placement.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate and critically evaluate standards in professional orchestral ensemble performance;
- demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and performance etiquette for professional situations;
- employ appropriate performance styles and practices;
- critically evaluate personal development and performance practice for works studied.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- communicate effectively in oral and written language, and in musical performance;
- communicate constructively in diverse professional situations;
- promote and maintain the wellbeing of self and others;

Additional details
Placement
Prior to undertaking the placement students are made aware of all placement details and expectations. The placement coordinator will monitor the student's progress during the placement which may involve site visits, discussions with the industry partner, verbal and/or written progress reports.
The placement industry partner will provide a written report on conclusion to both the student and the placement coordinator. All assessment is conducted by the subject coordinator.
