This subject introduces learners to the links between ‘space’ and novel and innovative pedagogies, bringing together interdisciplinary theoretical approaches in architecture, education and learning environments. It examines theories, debates, policies and practices of learning environments that advocate for a range of student learning outcomes, such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication, that are required of contemporary students. In doing so, it supports the development of learners’ spatial competencies to use the pedagogical affordances of innovative design features that are increasingly being used in schools and other educational institutions around the world.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Apply and integrate current theories, debates, policies and practices of learning environments to foster innovation in pedagogy and teaching practices
- Use the pedagogical affordances of learning environments such as ICT, furniture, whiteboards etc. to meet a diverse range of learning styles
- Foster innovative and inclusive practices in learning environments, and the capacity to apply this knowledge across a range of innovative design features
- Lead innovation processes in pedagogy and learning environments.
Generic skills
