Students will receive tuition in their area of practical study. Vocal and instrumental students will establish their technique and musical awareness in an individually designed program of technical exercises and repertoire. Formative feedback in individual and group settings will be provided across the semester.

In order to contextualise their education within the best practices of local, national and international standards, students are expected to work competently and productively both alone and in groups.

The subject involves participation in individual lessons, instrument/voice classes, concert class and/or assigned ensemble activities. In order to ensure the highest level of performance preparation, 100% attendance is expected.

Assessment Hurdle Class & Ensemble Information

Instrument and Vocal Classes: Information for Instrument and Vocal Classes can be found on the Fine Arts and Music Current Students website, or by contacting your Head of Area.

Concert Class: Students must apply to participate in Concert Class by completing the form on the Fine Arts and Music Current Students website.

Ensemble: Information for Ensemble Activities can be found on the Ensembles page in the Handbook. Please refer to each Ensemble subject for details including requisites and additional entry requirements. Note: Students do not formally enrol in these subjects.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • establish strategies for technical control and coordination;
  • execute technical exercises and repertoire at an appropriate level with fluency, accuracy, attention to detail and character;
  • project a well-shaped sound across the range of their instrument or voice;
  • apply appropriate style to technical repertoire;
  • perform music individually (and where appropriate collaboratively) with commitment and confidence.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject, students should have developed:

  • problem-solving skills;
  • skills in critical thinking and self-evaluation.

Students must meet one of the following prerequisite options:

Option 1

Admission into B-MUS Bachelor of Music

OR

Option 2

Admission into D-MUSIC Diploma in Music

AND

AUDITION: Students are required to request an audition for this subject via this link:

Participation in an Ensemble as part of an Assessment Hurdle

Bachelor of Music students can participate in an ensemble activity to meet a hurdle in this subject. Participation in an ensemble activity includes: attend classes, rehearsals, and performances (non-enrolled participation).

Note: Students must nominate an ensemble they are participating in to meet a hurdle before commencement. Once nominated, this ensemble activity cannot be changed.
