This subject provides practical support and guidance for participants preparing to undertake their research project in the second semester. It builds on the theoretical research paradigms and methods introduced in the graduate diploma research subject by supporting clinicians to develop and define a research question, and appropriate research design and methods. Recognising that clinicians have many competing demands on their time, the seminar days are workshops that will allow participants to develop important resources such as their clarified research question, literature search strategy, project design and ethics application.
Intended learning outcomes
By completing this subject, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the study of clinical education.
- Produce a research proposal that is designed to answer a clear, coherent question related to clinical education (at Masters level)
- Develop a comprehensive literature search strategy and analysis of the relevant clinical education literature
- Submit an application for Human Research Ethics Committee approval
Generic skills
On successful completion of this course, participants should have:
- Developed problem-solving skills related to educational research design and methods in a variety of clinical teaching contexts.
- Refined their analytical skills - the ability to construct and identify research questions to build educational theory and respond to questions arising from teaching practice
- Through discussion sessions and other interactions with fellow students, develop communication and presentation skills about education theory and research
